WEEK 5: DAYS 21-25

Day 21:

  1. Saints and Doctors, Anselm, Proslogion, pp. 31-32. Narrate

    1. Read p. 47 carefully.

    2. Fill in your list of possible mentors and, where possible contact info (we can work on that)

    3. Research your expert per the bottom of p. 47

    4. Turn to p. 48 and write notes about this possible mentor you have identified

    5. Ask Dad for Abbey ideas if you need to; he can help with contact info and introductions there as well

  3. Dante, Inferno, Canto XVII Narrate

  4. Huckleberry Finn, Chapters 27-28 Narrate

  5. Psalm 22 Narrate

  6. Ben, Duolingo

Day 23:

  1. Matthew 17-20 Narrate

  2. Senior Thesis, Write an email, p. 48-49

    1. Read the example email carefully

    2. Consider that if you need to, you can conduct any Q&A regarding your topic via further email exchanges, so it might be good to work that into your email as well, especially if the person isn’t local.

    3. I would use both my first and last names in the closing/signature of my email: looks more mature and professional than just using your first name

    4. Draft your email in the space provided OR in your thesis document

    5. If you use your doc, label your email draft CLEARLY –  ”Mentor Email Draft” – so that I will see it and give you credit for it.

  3. Dante, Inferno, Canto XVIII Narrate

  4. Huckleberry Finn, Chapters 29-30 Narrate

  5. Psalm 23 Narrate

  6. Ben, Duolingo

Day 24:

  1. Hebrews 13 Narrate

  2. Senior Thesis, Meet, pp. 50-51 (preparation for your meeting with your expert)

    1. Again, you CAN offer and opt to “meet” with your mentor/expert via email correspondence, though an in-person, phone, or Zoom meeting is certainly fine as well.

    2. Note the suggested phrases to help smooth a conversation along. These can be useful if you are writing back and forth as well.

    3. Note the importance of thanking this person for their time

    4. Read over the “Presentation Practice” on p. 51 to prepare for the conversation you will have, whether in person or via correspondence

  3. Shakespeare, The Taming of the Shrew, Act V Narrate

  4. Psalm 24 Narrate

  5. Ben, Duolingo

Day 25:

  1. Fides et Ratio, 17-20. Narrate

  2. Senior Thesis, Presentation, pp. 52-53

    1. This section provides you with space to create a little script for yourself, which can be really helpful when you are conducting an interview, whether in person, on the phone, or via email

    2. So, fill in the script before you meet or send your “interview” email. They provide you with some sample questions which will work well, though if you have any specific ones, write them in so you don’t forget them.

    3. This can in fact be the draft of your side of an email “interview.” It’s very common for an interviewer to send an email with a set of questions, which the interviewee can then take time to ponder and answer in a reply.

    4. If you’re meeting in person, you’ll want to jot the interviewee’s answers in the spaces provided.

    5. If you’re emailing, you can wait until they reply, then jot their answers, or just print them out and save them.

    6. Take copious notes from your meeting (p. 54). The more you have written down, the less you’ll have to pull out of thin air when it’s time to write in earnest.

  3. John Dryden, “Song to a Fair Young Lady Going Out of Town in the Spring” Narrate

  4. Essay: "How to Do What You Love"

  5. Psalm 25 Narrate

NOTE THAT NEXT WEEK IS AN ESSAY WEEK.

From a list of topics, you will choose one essay per day to write – 300-500 words (so, short. A page to a page and a half, max).

Go back over your reading and narrations from Weeks 1-5, so that everything is very fresh in your mind.

Note that the essays you write for me can be the germ of your college application essays, so take them seriously. They will also form a large part of your grade for English, Religion, Art Appreciation and Music Appreciation (so if you haven't been noticing the art or listening to the music: DO).

You will not have any other work for next week, so this will also give you a chance to catch up on your thesis and any reading you still need to do, as well as spending extra time researching your chosen topic.

There will be another essay week in Week 12.
